Concept and user interface design

Concept design
The most important decisions about the new product are made in the concept generation phase. Group work techniques are used for ideation and for analysis of information from technical, business, and user requirements. Design ideas are developed with e.g. sketches, flowcharts, scenarios, and lo-fi paper prototypes.

The deliverable is a description of the concept, its functionality, UI structure, interaction styles, navigation paths, screen layouts, etc. An important outcome is also the shared view in the design team.

User Interface design
Detailed UI design phase turns the concept into a solution by producing:

  • specifications for implementation
  • prototypes for validation
  • actual graphical material
  • support materials, such as help texts

This task is completed using interaction design (visualisations, flow charts, guidelines checks and tests) and graphic design techniques. Prototypes are built and tested. The outcome of the project is a detailed specification.
